Thuja are known as Cedars or Arborvitae (hardy evergreens) which cover a wide range of colours and forms.

Thuja koraiensis - Korean Arborvitae.   Strongly scented foliage in fan-like sprays which are pastel blue on the underside.   Conical shape.   Most attractive for floral work.   3 metres high x 2 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden. Zone 5.

Thuja occidentalis is literally the

"Eastern Arborvitae, White Cedar".

Thuja occidentalis - American Arborvitae.   White Cedar.   Native of East North America and Canada often growing in cold swampy ground.   Compact, upright habit.   Eventually a large tree, green in colour.   Zone 2.   No longer in Production.

Thuja occidentalis 'Caespitosa' - Dwarf, slow growing.   Tailor made for the larger rockery.   It is very neat and very tight in appearance.   An attractive plant that should be planted more in this country.   Rounded hummock.   Wider than high.   45 cm high x 60 cm wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 2.

Thuja occidentalis 'Columbia' - Silvertip Arborvitae.  Rich green tipped on all extremities with creamy-white new growth.   Broadly pyramidal.   2.5 metres high x 1.2 metres wide at base in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 2.

Thuja occidentalis 'Danica' - Small, compact, round, holding its branchlets in vertically held sprays, foliage mid green. Ball shaped. Should be planted more. 50 cm high x 65 cm wide in 10 years. Zone 2.

Thuja occidentalis 'Elegantissima' - This is an old cultivar recently re-introduced by Cedar Lodge from the renown New Zealand Garden of Eastwoodhill.   It has creamy coloured  foliage mainly near the tips and outer exposed parts.  Somewhat similar to Thuja occidentalis 'Columbia'.   A broad pyramid shape reaching perhaps 3 metres in 10 years.

Thuja occidentalis 'Ericoides' - This is a plant of fixed juvenile foliage.   The colour is a soft, dull green in summer and a medium purplish brown in winter.   Has been very popular for many years.   The shape is almost a round ball. 70 cm high x 1 metre wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 2.

Thuja occidentalis 'Holmstrup' - An excellent sturdy, compact upright tree very similar to Thuja occidentalis 'Pyramidalis'.   Not very wide.   A very pleasant green, turning slightly brownish in winter.   This colour change does not detract from the beauty of the plant.   Can be used as a formal hedge or formal accent in any situation.   An excellent pyramidal tree.   3 metres high x 60 cm wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.

Thuja occidentalis 'Lutea' - A bright orange-yellow during the growing season. The most colourful rich brilliant orange gold in winter.   An excellent pyramidal tree. Young plants straggly at first but soon becoming a pyramid.   This variety should be made much more use of in gardens because of its winter glory and its formal upright habit. 2.5 metres high x 1 metre wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 2.

Thuja occidentalis 'Olhendorfii' - This is quite a horticultural curiosity carrying two kinds of foliage.   Both adult and juvenile.   It has a novelty effect in the garden. Thuja occidentalis 'Pendula' - Weeping form.   Irregular habit, upright, but with stem and branches full of bends and turns, winding and wavering, directed downward.   Twigs pendulous.   A very interesting and unusual conifer.  Great for landscape effect.   2 metres high x 1.5 metres wide in 8 years in our Nursery/Garden.

Thuja occidentalis 'Pumilio Sudworthii' - Mentioned in Wansdyke Nursery handbook as 'Sudworth Pumila'.   Golden foliage in summer and bright orange-gold in winter.   This plant introduced into the New Zealand trade about 1987, is hard to distinguish from Thuja occidentalis 'Lutea'.   It is an upright, pyramidal tree.   2.5 metres high x 1.5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 2.   No longer Produced.

Thuja occidentalis 'Rheingold' - Golden in summer, bronzy gold in winter. Semi-coastal.  Salt wind keeps it low.  If sheltered this plant will eventually grow into 'Ellwangeriana Aurea'.   Can be trimmed to desired size most successfully. Thuja occidentalis 'Vervaeneana' - See Thuja plicata 'Zebrina'.

Thuja occidentalis 'Wansdyke Silver' - A rare and outstanding feature plant with white flecks.  Very slow growing.  In our garden this plant is in the full blast of our salt laden wind which has not affected it at all.   We have tried it in several situations and find it is very useful in shade or partial shade as well as full sun.   In our opinion this Thuja is not utilized to its full potential.   There would be a place for one in every garden.   2 metres high x 1 metre wide at base in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Zone 2.

Thuja occidentalis 'Wareana Lutescens' - Attractive light butter yellow-green.   Slightly bronzy in winter.   The only conifer to our knowledge carrying this unique colour.   In areas where Cypress canker is a problem and Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Silver Queen' does not survive very long, this Thuja is a wonderful substitute for colour.   Can be used as a hedge or screen as well as a specimen.   Broad pyramidal shrub.   1.5 metres high x 1 metre wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 2.
