The Swamp Cypresses are useful trees for growing near water (they also grow perfectly well on dry land).  There are a few different forms available,  some of which have rich autumn foliage.

Taxodium ascendens - Pond Cypress.   Native of South East U.S.A.   (This taxodium has recently had a name change - it may now be known as Taxodium distichum var. imbricatum.)  A beautifully graceful tree with good winter hardiness.  Foliage shoots are stiff and grow upright on the branch or branchlet as shown in photo 2.   Knees are rarely produced, even when growing near water.   Columnar.   (This tree does not need to grow near water - it will happily grow on dry land)   7 metres high x 4.5 metres wide in 8 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 7. Winter Colour as shown in photo 3.

Seedlings   PB 6.5    1.2 mtrs high     $20.50

Taxodium ascendens 'Nutans' - A tree, columnar.   Trunk very wide at the base, branches very short, horizontal, but partly upright. Branchlets densely crowded, erect at first, later nodding.  Has a wriggly appearance.   Good winter hardiness.   12-15 metres high in Natural habitat.   7 metres high x 4.5 metres wide at widest point in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.

Taxodium distichum - Swamp Cypress.   Native of South East North America in swamps and along river banks.   Will grow in very wet areas but equally at home in ordinary soil conditions.   Hardy, has lovely autumn colour.   An interesting feature of old trees growing in swampy conditions is the emergence from the ground of numerous nobbly root protuberances known as "cypress knees".   These are usually hollow.   5 metres high x 2.5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Photo 2 is Taxodium distichum showing Autumn Colour . Photo 3 shown  as a Bonsai Tree.
Seedlings PB 6.5 1 mtr + high $19.50
