Zone 9. Photo 2  Totara Flowers. Photo 3 Totara Needles.  Photo 4 Totara Fruit. Photo 5 Totara Bark.
Seedlings (Stkd)    PB 6.5    1 mtr + high     $19.50

Planting totara for timber.   Stands of totara less than 100 years old have a high proportion of sapwood.  This wood can be used for furniture, joinery and also for exterior woodwork, as long as it is not in contact with the ground.   Planning for large-scale totara planting programmes is relatively easy.   Seed can be collected in most years.   Seedlings are now a reasonable cost unlike many years ago.   Totara seedlings are raised either in open beds as bare-rooted stock, or in containers and reach a planting height of 50 to 80 cm in three to five years.   Totara grows best when planted in late winter or early spring.   At low altitude or warmer districts it can be planted in Autumn.   Planting pattern and density will vary according to the type and location of the plantation.   Stem form and branch development may be influenced by spacing (approx. 1.5-2 metres each way).   A nurse crop is advisable for protection from gale force winds and frosts in the early years.   (Phormium tenax - Flax is recommended as a nurse crop)    The young tree must not be crowded out by other species.   Regular releasing is essential.   Once a two metre height is reached the totara can look after itself.

If seedlings for timber or shelter planting is required please contact Greg Sampson at our Nursery.

Podocarpus totara 'Albany Gold' - A special selection showing more intense winter colour than 'Aureus'.   Pod. tot. 'Albany Gold' is a female plant.   A more comprehensive description will be forthcoming in the future.   4 metres high x 2 metres wide in 7 years in our Nursery/Garden.
Cutting Grown (Stkd)    PB 6.5    60 cm  high    $19.50

Podocarpus totara 'Aureus' - Golden Totara.   N.Z. native.   Same as the species in the wild but foliage a pale green in spring gradually hardening off to yellow then a brilliant deep gold in winter.   The golden form is a male plant.   Because this plant is slower growing than the species it can be grown in the smallest of gardens and trimmed to any shape.   It is becoming more and more popular each year especially for farm shelter.   Stock have no desire to eat the prickly foliage unless really forced to and with trimming it stays clothed right to the ground.   Responds extra well to heavy trimming therefore totara 'Aureus' can be kept to almost any size or shape required. Eventually developes into a particularly spectacular shelter tree.   Arguably N.Z's most under-rated tree.   Dislikes wet sites.   Where there are animals, double fencing is still essential.   3.5 metres high x 3.5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Photo 2 shows a cut hedge.  Photo 3 trimmed as a Pillar . Photo 4 a street planting.

"Pouakani" is by general consensus the biggest totara in New Zealand, situated in a small reserve west of Lake Taupo.   The tree was discovered in 1947 by Forest Service rangers.   When measured in about 1978 its diameter at breast height was 363 cm and its height was 39 metres.   No doubt it has continued to add girth.
