Pinus radiata - Monterey Pine.  3 needles.  (also named the remarkable pine)   Restricted to 3 localities on the Coast of California.  Tender to frost & snow when young.   Best in light moist well drained loam.  Good on dry infertile sandy soils.  Grown in our Nursery but not in the Garden.   It is a great plantation timber tree on our property and also used for shelter.  Very fast growing making 30 metres in 17 years and according to other records can reach 65 metres in 40 years.   Zone 8.   Please enquire if required for planting in Taranaki.

Pinus radiata 'Aurea' - 3 needles.   This pine originally found in New Zealand should be planted much more than it is, being most suitable for the average to large garden in all areas, except it should be kept away from severe salt laden winds.  Most decorative.   Sun almost all day brings out the best colour.   Avoid low lying areas that maybe damp. i.e. very free draining soil necessary.  5 metres high x 3 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.    Zone 8 - 9. Pinus roxburghii - Chir Pine.   Long Leafed Indian Pine.   3 needles.  Native of Himalayas from Bhutan to North East Pakistan. Very long needles approximately 30 cm long, arranged like a bottle brush.  Most attractive.  Looks at its best in deep well drained light soils given full light.  Will grow in a variety of conditions and in very different soils.  Partly deciduous in arid places.  Used for Bonsai.   Has very decorative cork like bark and attractive catkins.   For the larger garden if not in a tub.   Very decorative.  5 metres high x 4.5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 9. Pinus serotina - Pond Pine.   3 needles.   Native of South east U.S.A. Restricted to coastal plain of South east U.S.A.   It can occur in wet places (and in swamps).   Drying out in summer and not too wet in winter but will tolerate some snow.   A pine that likes to grow below 60 metres above sea level in a temperate climate.   6 metres high x 5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 8.

Pinus strobus - Weymouth Pine.  5 needles.  Native of East Coast of North America.  A fast growing ornamental pine.  A graceful tree and a fine garden subject.  Although fast growing it is not too big for the average to large garden for many years as it is a narrow shape with bluish needles.  5 metres high x 2.5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 3.

Pinus sylvestris - Scots Pine.  2 needles.  Green to blue-green colour especially when young.   Pinkish orange trunk with age.   Wind and salt wind hardy.   Can be used as shelter or a screen.   Not too large for the average garden in its earlier years.   Doing well at 2.5 metres high x 2.5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Zone 2.

Pinus sylvestris 'Beuvronensis' - A very attractive dwarf form of irregular habit.  Densely branched.  An old favourite. Still very popular.  60 cm high x 50 cm wide in 8 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Not available this season.

Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica - Mongolian Scots Pine.   2 needles.   Native of Mongolia growing in lakes and saline swamps.   Can stand severe cold. Also grows on sand dunes and along river courses, terraces and sand banks.   Turns yellow-gold in winter even in our garden.    Growing well at 3.5 metres high x 1.5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 2.

Pinus thunbergii - Japanese Black Pine.   2 needles.   A maritime species. Proved here by using this pine for seaside planting.  Very successful in holding the dunes and surviving and growing in sight of the waves where radiata will not survive.  Young plants sturdy, handsome and vigorous with new growth "candles" in spring being tall, white and fluffy, making the tree most attractive.  A good tub and Bonsai plant as it retains its needles in extremely dry conditions.  Prune yearly to control shape and size.  Doing very well in a very salt-windy site in our Nursery/Garden.  6 metres high x 5 metres wide in 10 years.  Zone 6.  Please enquire for a special price if thunbergii is required for shelter.

Pinus torreyana - Torrey pine.   Soledad pine.   5 needles.   Native to a very restricted range in southern California, confined to low coastal bluffs flanking the Soledad Valley north of San Diego.   Altitude 150 metres.   The needles are a blue grey colour.   A relic pine, rare in cultivation.   Will stand our coastal winds.   We have two plants the oldest growing in strong salt winds is 10 metres high x 6 metres wide in 15 years.  A younger one in a slightly more sheltered spot (cutting grown) is 2 metres high x 1.5 metres wide in 5 years with a good apical dominant leader.

Pinus wallichiana - (syn. griffithii) Bhutan Pine. Himalayan Pine.  5 needles.   Native of Himalayas.    An attractive ornamental with bluish needles and downward hanging cones.   More resistant to pollution.   Can be quite wide.   6 metres high x 5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.    Zone 6.

Pinus yunnanensis -  3 needles.  Native of South West China. Branches pendulous. Very long needles up to 30 cm long. Tree pyramidal. 4 metres high x 4 metres wide in 10 years.
