The pines are probably the most diverse genus of any conifer.

The different needle counts are important links to show relationships between the species and these are also a guide to compatibility's when grafting pines.

Pinus armandii - Chinese White PineArmand Pine.  5 needles.   Native of Central China.  A fine tree, attractive with an air of grace.  Do not plant in extreme salt wind.   4 metres high x 4 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 7. Photo is of a close up of cones.

Pinus banksiana - Jack Pine.  Usually 2 needles.  Native of Canada.  A short needled pine.  Bark orange-grey striped.  Extremely hardy, can grow on land permanently frozen.  Best on moist sandy soils.  Makes a very good subject for a Japanese garden.  3.5 metres high x 3 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 2.

Pinus canariensis - Canary Island Pine.  3 needles.  Native of Canary Islands. Sub-tropical.  Grows on dry slopes in native land.  Rich glaucous blue in first years changing to green later.  A must for large gardens.  7 metres high x 3 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   A magnificent conical sentinel. Zone 6.

Pinus coulterii - Big Cone Pine.   3 needles.   Native to the inner coast ranges of California and North West Mexico. Seeds edible.   An interesting garden subject in its young state. Needs very dry or free draining site.   Does not take kindly to our Taranaki salt laden winds but OK within shelter.   5 metres high x 3 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden. Zone 8.

Pinus densiflora - Japanese Red Pine.  2 needles.   Native of Japan.   Reddish bark.   Variable shape.   Dark foliage.   Tendency to twist.   Excellent for bonsai. Can be pruned.   3 metres high x 2 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 5.

Pinus densiflora 'Umbraculifera' - Tanyosho Pine.    Japanese Red Pine cultivar.  This tree develops a rounded dome-shaped or umbrella crown, achieving 4 metres tall by 6 metre spread with time.   Common in Cultivation around the world.   Very attractive.   It is very slow growing.  1.5 metres high x 2 metres wide in 7 years.   Zone 5.

Pinus durangensis - Durango Pine5-7 needles  Native to the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains of northwestern Mexico. Related to Ponderosa Pine. Tree reaches 25-40 m in height, with a trunk up to 1 m diameter and a broad, rounded crown. The bark is thick, dark grey-brown, and scaly or fissured.

Pinus edulis - Pinyon Pine.   Colorado/Rocky Mountain Pine.   2 needles. Native of Mexico, S. West U.S.A.   Admirable for landscape work.   A small neat pleasing tree.   Seeds nutlike and edible.  70 cm high x 45 cm wide in 8 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Tree 6 to 15 metres in natural habitat.   Zone 7-8.

Pinus edulis var. fallax - A rare local variant reported from Arizona, South west Utah and South west New Mexico. Juvenile growth blue. Choose a dry, well drained site. Growth rate very slow. 3 metres high x 1 metre wide in 12 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 7 - 8

Pinus glabra - Spruce Pine.  2 needles.  Confined to the Coastal Plain of South East USA from South Carolina to North Florida.  Likes moist sub-tropical areas. Stands shade when young.  Will survive in temperatures down to minus 7 degrees Celsius.   May need a sheltered site.  Tree to 20 metres in native habitat.  Zone 9.

Pinus greggii - Gregg Pine.  3 needles.  Native of Mexico.  Closely related to Pinus patula, but with shorter coarser needles - growth rate similar.  Occurs on dry cold areas.  Cones remain closed on tree for several years.  A medium sized tree.  4 metres high x 3 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 7.
