The Spruces cover a range of interesting forms. Some are suitable for warmer districts, while others are not.

Picea asperata - Native of West China.  Slow and bushy for some years.  Very frost hardy and lime tolerant.  A tall tree, crown broadly conical.  Moving buds bright red.  2.5 metres high x 1 metre wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.    Zone 6.

Picea bracytyla - Northern Sargent Spruce, Chinese Weeping Spruce.   Native of W. China.   One of the most beautiful spruces.   Flushes late and misses the frosts. A rapid grower after being slow at first.   Quite small at maturity compared to other spruces.   Moist soil preferred.   Doing beautifully in our Nursery/Garden.   4 metres high x 2.5 metres wide in 10 years in our garden.   Zone 7.

Picea chihuahuana - Chihuahua Spruce.  Native of Mexico.  Resembles Picea pungens.  Rarely found in cultivation.  Grows into a tree in time.  A conical form in its wild state.  3 metres high x 2 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 7.

Picea engelmannii - Engelmann Spruce.  Native of West, North America.  Thrives on all soils if sufficiently moist.  Tolerant of extreme cold.  Dense, pyramidal habit.  Slow growth.  2 metres high x 1.2 metres wide at base in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Zone 3.

Picea engelmannii var. glauca - Blue Engelman Spruce.  Needles intensely blue green.  Because of its colour this is the most common cultivar. 1  metre high x 85 cm wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 3.

Picea engelmannii var. mexicana - Native of Mexico.  Very blue.  Seems intermediate between engelmanii (likes it not so dry) and pungens (likes it dry).  Can stand dry conditions and also moisture.  A conical tree.  2.8 metres high x 1.2 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.

Picea farreri - Burman Spruce or Farrer Spruce.   Native of Burma.   Discovered in 1980.   Consistently occurs at lower altitude than its ally Picea bracytyla.  Picea farreri is restricted to western Yunnan and far north eastern Burma and possibly getting into extreme north eastern India and adjacent Tibet.   Prefers a moist site.  A tree up to 30 metres in native habitat.  1.8 metres high x 2 metres wide at base in 6 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 8.

Picea glauca 'Albertiana Conica' - Formerly known as Picea glauca 'Conica'. Found wild in Canada.  First class rockery and garden subject.  Compact, erect-growing garden gem.  In mild, humid, shady situations it is prone to attack by mites. (This is the case with many Picea).  These can be easily controlled by spraying.   80 cm high x 40 cm wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 2.

Picea glehnii - Sakhalin Spruce.  Native of Japan.  Found in bogs from sea level to 1600 metres altitude.  Grows well on peat and wet cold sites.  Growth slow when young. Narrowly conic and rather dense.  Seedlings vary greatly - in our Nursery/Garden is a very small specimen 15 cm high x 20 cm wide in 10 years and a larger size which is 1 metre high x 80 cm wide in 10 years.   Zone 6.

Picea jezoensis - Yezo Spruce.  Native of North East Asia and Japan. Undersides of needles conspicuously silvery-greyish-white.  Pyramidal shape.  Used for bonsai.  Tree to 50 metres in native habitat.  1.1 metres high x 1.1 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Zone 4.

Picea jezoensis var. hondoensis - Hondo Spruce.  Native of Honshu, Japan. Ideal specimen tree.  Cones purplish red. Underside of foliage silvery-blue.  Conical shape.  Hardier than the species.  1.5 metres high x 1.3 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Zone 4.

Picea koraiensis - Korean Spruce.  Native of North Korea.  In North East China it grows at an altitude of 400 to 1800 metres.  Leaves bluish green.   In native habitat a large tree 80 metres.  Much smaller in cultivation.  50 cm high x 35 cm wide in 7 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Zone 5.

Picea koyamai - Koyama Spruce.  Native of Japan.  The rarest of all Japanese Spruces.  A shapely and decidedly ornamental Spruce.  A stiff crowned dark blue tree.  Prefers wet peaty sites.  Doing well in our Nursery/Garden.  2.5 metres high x 1.7 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Zone 6.

Picea meyerii - Meyerii Spruce.  A native of the mountains of China.  A medium tall tree.  Intermediate between Picea asperata and Picea likiangensis.  Growth rate unknown.  Zone 5

Picea omorika - Serbian Spruce.  Native of Yugoslavia.  One of the few Spruces that stands pollution.  Adaptable to many soils and situations.  Does not seem to be so susceptible to pests in N.Z.  Unlike other Spruces.  A handsome tree, tapering, spire-like, seldom spreading more than 3 metres at base.  Habitually narrow and erect.  Does well in salt wind in our Garden.  One of 3 spruces not subject to mite damage.  3.5 metres high x 2.3 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 5.

Picea orientalis - Oriental or Eastern Spruce.  Native of Caucasus and Asia Minor.  A handsome pyramidal conifer. Dark green foliage.  New growth bright red/purple.  Stands drought.  One of 3 Spruces that is not susceptible to mite damage.  Growth rate 30 cm per year.  Doing very well in our garden.  2.3 metres high x 2 metres wide at base in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 5.

Picea orientalis 'Skylands' - A beautiful golden form of recent introduction. Picea pungens 'Glauca' - Blue Colorado Spruce.  A good blue form is amongst the most highly prized garden conifers.  Even the green seedlings make a lovely garden subject.  A batch of seedlings may not have many very good blue seedlings amongst them.  If one is found, it is outstanding with a good conical shape and good straight leader.  Plant in cool, moist soil.  Spray for mites if needle drop occurs.  Up to 3 metres high x 1.5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 2.

Picea pungens 'Moerheim' - The Moerheim Blue Spruce. Found in Holland in 1912.  A slender, conical tree.  The blue colour retained throughout the winter. Picea pungens 'Pendula' - The colour is green on the inside of the tree but the previous years growth and the new seasons growth is a very beautiful blue.   If not staked this Conifer would lie on the ground it is so weeping.   The branches just hang limply down creating a pole like appearance with the bottom branches creeping across the ground. 1.5 metres high x 45 cm wide all the way up the tree in 8 years in our Nursery/Garden.

Picea purpurea - Purple Spruce.  Native of West China.  Formerly Picea likiangensis var. purpurea.  A narrow form of the Likiang Spruce.  Purple cones, which light up the tree in spring. Picea smithiana - West Himalayan Spruce.  Native of the West Himalaya, Afghanistan to Nepal.  Formerly known as Picea morinda.  Similar to Picea breweriana in habit.  As Picea breweriana is so slow, this tree can take its place in the garden for many years and give added pleasure until the other more sought after (but harder to obtain) tree is available. Beautiful specimen tree.  Will not survive in temperatures below minus 17°C.  Doing well in Taranaki in our nursery/garden.  3 metres high x 2 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 6.
