Cephalotaxus Species

Cephalotaxus is a genus of a few species closely allied to Taxus. These could be viewed as the Asian yews.
Cephalotaxus foliage Cephalotaxus fortunei - Fortune Plum Yew. Native of Eastern & Central China.   Needles are longer than those of the related harringtonia. Will grow in shade very well. Fortunei makes a spreading bush. 3 metres high & wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.   Zone 7.  Produced to order.

Cephalotaxus harringtonii 'Fastigiata' - Upright Japanese Plum Yew. Strong vertical growth, not unlike an Irish Yew. Bright green spring growth. Most attractive. A slow starter. Does well in shade as well as full sun. Columnar shape. 1.5 metres high x 1.2 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Zone 7.

Cephalotaxus harringtonii 'Prostrata' - A broad spreading plant most attractive in spring when new growth is pale lime green. Good for filling in under or near larger trees. Shade loving. 1 metre high x 1.5 metres wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Zone 7.

Cephalotaxus harringtonii var. drupacea- A native of Japan. A low spreading tree. Developing a wide rounded crown. Does well in intense shade.  2 metres high and wide in 10 years in our Nursery/Garden.  Zone 6.

Cephalotaxus sinensis  -  Chinese plum yew.   Native to east & central China south to Yunnan.  Is closely related to Cephalotaxus harringtonia but is most clearly different by the slender drawn out tips to leaves.  In cultivation is a shrub to 5 metres but in natural habitat can reach 15 metres.
