Abelia grandiflora - (Glossy Abelia)

Grows in all reasonable locations and soils, forming a dense living wall within two years.  It is happy in full sun or semi-shade.   Soft lush tip growth is a pleasure to trim.  Makes a good hedge from 1 to 2 m high.   (Cutting Grown)

Alnus cordata - Italian Alder - Deciduous.

Medium growth rate shelter or shade tree. Moisture loving, ideal for boggy places. Excellent in low branch retention and responds well to trimming if trimmed before December. Later trimming can reduce re-sprouting. Alders are not suitable for windward boundaries. They are most suited for internal shelter belts. A major advantage of Alders is that they fix atmospheric nitrogen and do not compete with crop for nutrients. A growth rate of 1 to 1.5 metres a year can be expected. Faster with irrigation.

Alnus glutinosa - Black Alder - Deciduous.

Similar to cordata, but will stand low to medium salt exposure and has an extra fortnight deciduous period. It will also stand later trimming and will re-shoot, if trimmed, as late as February.

Agathis australis - N.Z. Kauri.

A slow to moderate growth rate. Native tree best known for its timber quality. It's wind hardiness makes it an ideal prospect as a shelter tree, or spaced wider, as a amenity or screen planting.

Araucaria heterophylla -  Norfolk Island Araucaria.

Suitable for large garden or as a farm shelter especially on the coast. It is frost tender until about 1.5 metres high or it gets the adult foliage. However it can be established in marginal areas if frost protection is provided in the early years. Green colour throughout life. Extremely salt wind resistant. Superb tree for coastal shelter belts. Cryptomeria japonica 'Egmont'  ® - (Cutting Grown) Japanese Cedar. Clonal selection by Cedar Lodge shows superior form, wind hardiness and growth rate. Hardy to all but severe coastal conditions. Will thrive in good rich loams, but will also tolerate a wide range of soils even in high rainfall areas as long as there is reasonable drainage. Cryptomeria will stand strong winds and severe cold. Performs particularly well on the higher, colder, wetter country close to Mt. Egmont. It trims very well. growth rate is moderately fast and it is disease resistant and stable. Lonicera nitida - (Box Honeysuckle)

Densely branched, small leaved shrub from China, long used as a neat low hedge. Grows well in almost any conditions. Easily clipped and maintained from 50 cm to125 cm high x 30 cm wide. Small creamy-white flowers in early summer are followed by translucent purple blue berries which are evident if shrub is not trimmed. Quite fast growing.   (Cutting Grown)

Podocarpus acutifolius - Needle Leafed Totara. A very compact version of the N.Z. Totara. Makes a nice fine hedge. Trims easily. Growing as a hedge in our nursery/garden, it is excellent. Colour a greenish-brown. A quote from the book 'THE CULTIVATION OF N.Z. TREES AND SHRUBS' by L J Metcalf - "It will grow in most soils and situations and stands quite severe pruning. Although untried it should make an ideal hedge plant. Rare in cultivation. "A quote from "ORNAMENTAL CONIFERS" - "It makes a fine hedge that trims well and does not need constant cutting".

Podocarpus totara 'Aureus' - Golden Totara

N.Z. native. Is becoming more and more popular each year especially for shelter. Stock have no desire to eat the prickly foliage unless really forced to and with trimming it stays clothed right to the ground. Responds extra well to heavy trimming therefore totara can be kept to almost any size or shape required. Eventually developes into a particularly spectacular shelter tree. The new foliage in spring gradually deepens it's golden colour to be at it's best in winter. Arguably N.Z's most under rated tree. Dislikes wet sites. Where there are animals, double fencing is still   essential.

Rosmarinus 'Tuscan Blue' - Rosemary

Rigid, upright branches grow directly from the base of the plant. With clipping, it forms an excellent low aromatic hedge. Rosemary endures hot sun and poor soil but needs good drainage. The plants are frost hardy and once established, quite drought hardy. Green foliage and bright blue violet flowers.

Sequoia sempervirens - Coastal Redwood. Californian Redwood.

Native of that area of U.S.A. A stately tall growing tree for moist sites. Excellent backdrop foliage. Although called the coast Redwood it does not like the salt laden winds of coastal Taranaki. It must therefore be grown in sheltered valleys or well away from the coast. Grows well in dampish, cold gully or ravine type situations. If grown within shelter it will have its top burnt off as soon as it reaches above the surrounding shelter. Worlds tallest tree.    (Seedlings)
